Nutella Hot Chocolate

January 25, 2014 by Keri 6 Comments

It has been so unbearably cold here in the northeast the past few days, and unfortunately it’s going to continue for the next week or so. It’s hard for me to get warm after being out in these frigid temperatures, but a mug of steaming hot chocolate sure does the trick! I’ve never been very fond of the packaged hot chocolate mixes because they aren’t chocolaty (or rich) enough for me. I’ve made it before with chocolate syrup and cocoa powder with good results, but one day I got the idea to use Nutella. What a great idea it was!

Incase you are living under a rock and don’t know what Nutella is, it’s simply a chocolate hazelnut spread. You can use it like you would peanut butter; on toast, in cookies, or make a nutella and banana sandwich. You can find it next to the peanut butter in the grocery store, but make sure you buy the classic Nutella. There are wannabe versions from the big name brands available but, the flavor is much better in the original.

I seriously love Nutella; the rich chocolate flavor and the nuttiness from the hazelnuts- it’s just the best combination ever. Put your packaged mixes aside, because this hot chocolate is going to blow your mind. And, the best part is, it’s super simple to make!

First, grab your favorite mug (a big one!) and fill it up with milk, leaving it about an inch from the top. Next, pour it into a saucepan and add a heaping tablespoon of Nutella. When I say heaping, I mean a serious heaping tablespoon! You can, of course, adjust the amount to your preference – the more you add the more richness and chocolate flavor you will have.

Now, just whisk it constantly over medium heat until it’s steaming and gently bubbling around the edges of the pan. Serve it up with marshmallows or fresh whipped cream. You can even go ahead and have it with both – I won’t tell anyone!

This hot chocolate is pretty much dessert status since it’s so rich, but I promise you it’s worth every calorie and it will definitely warm you up a cold day.
